There have been found many petroglyps over the island, these are rock carvings. Also in different places there has been found pottery and utensils as proof of the ancient civilisations that lived here before the Columbian times. It is said that the indigenous saw the island as a sacred place, and also called it “The island of the Gods”.
Nature
What is the most striking about the island are ofcourse its two volcanoes. On the north island the mighty Conception volcano is rising to a higth of 1600 meters. This is a still active volcano, which you can see by the strange clouds that often form on it’s top. The south island is formed around the dormant volcano Maderas, it’s slopes are coverd in a dense forest. The two islands are connected by a isthmus, trough which there is a beautiful river flowing. Wherever you are on the island, you will feel surrounded by nature, with all the beautiful plants and birds around you.
Local people
You’ll notice when you go around the island that you’ll meet a lot of lovely smiling locals. They are one of the most friendly people there are on earth. Most of them speak only Spanish (with a Nicaraguan dialect), so to be able to communicate with them it would be good to practice your Spanish a bit. The people are very friendly and are a part of what makes Ometepe such a special place.
